True of false–an episode of Star Trek: the Next Generation was essentially banned from being broadcast in Great Britain and Ireland?
The answer is true and the reason is somewhat amusing. The episode in question is "The High Ground," which originally aired in the United States on January 29, 1991. The storyline centered on inter-planetary terrorists and the attack on a neutral planet. Speaking to his crew on the bridge of the starship, Captain Picard stated that terrorism didn't advance any cause; however, android Mr Data–a non-human crew member on the ship–recalled a number of terrorist efforts that did advance a cause including a successful terrorist campaign which led to the reunification of Ireland in 2024. (Keep in mind Star Trek is set in the future!) The episode wasn't shown on broadcast TV anywhere in the British Isles for many years. The show was edited in satellite transmissions on Sky One. However, it was recently shown on RTÉ albeit with a viewer advisory assuring people that the content of the science fiction show was, well, fictional.
