So, has there ever been an Irish pope? Of course, the answer is no.  There has been an English pope, Pope Adrian IV, elected to the Papacy on December 3, 1154; however, there has never been an Irish pope, but someone came close.  St. Kilian of Aubigny, born in 640, was reputedly offered the papacy, but he declined.  Kilian was born near Mullagh in County Cavan.  He is the patron saint of Tuosist in Kerry: he reputedly lived in the area before leaving for continental Europe.  He was a missionary, preaching in what is now modern Germany in the region of the city of Würzburg.  < Prev   Next >
