Which of the following seven countries boasts the lowest average annual rainfall: Australia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Luxembourg or Mexico?
And the answer is Ireland! Here's a list of the countries from highest to lowest and the average annual rainfall in millimeters. - Japan 1,406 mm
- Australia 1,304 mm
- Italy 944 mm
- Luxembourg 848 mm
- Mexico 844 mm
- Lebanon 825 mm
- Ireland 731 mm
Ireland is a damp place, but 49 countries in the world get more precipitation per year. Most major US cities get more rain than does Ireland. Here's a list of US cities with the annual rainfall from highest to lowest–surprising for those who think that Ireland is the wettest place on Earth! Memphis 1,389 mm Jacksonville 1,328 mm Atlanta 1,275 mm New York City 1,262 mm Nashville 1,222 mm Houston 1,214 mm Louisville 1,130 mm Charlotte 1,107 mm Boston 1,080 mm Philadelphia 1,069 mm Baltimore 1,064 mm Indianapolis 1,041 mm
It makes Ireland look like a desert. To drive home the point, the highest average annual rainfall is on Mount Waialeale, Hawaii with 11,680 mm; the greatest amount of rain in any single year was recorded in Cherrapunji, India with 26,461 mm: 36.2 times as much as Ireland. Cherrapunji also boasts the highest rainfall amount recorded in a single month: 9,300 mm. Ireland doesn't get a lot of rain, it just rains a lot. While Ireland may have more rainy days that many of the countries or cities listed above, the total annual rainfall is much lower.
