A day after independent Sinn Féin politician Gerry McHugh addressed the inaugural meeting of Fermanagh South Tyrone Fianna Fáil Forum, he announced he was joining the party.  At the Forum in Enniskillen, he stated that "Fianna Fail was the right party to bring about change in Northern Ireland." He became the first member of Fianna Fáil, the party formed from opponents of the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty, to a member of the Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly.  He has served on Fermanagh District Council since 1993 and was Chairman for the Enniskillen area in 2003/4.  He was elected to the Assembly in 1998, 2003 and again in 2007. Although a member of the Assembly, McHugh stated that he would still be an independent.  However, he becomes the first member of any legislative body in Northern Ireland to have a direct connection with Fianna Fáil since Éamon de Valera in 1933.  De Valera was elected a member of the parliament at Stormont for South Down, though he never took his seat. As of December 2009, Fianna Fáil has no plans to contest elections in the North. < Prev   Next >
