August 15, 2008: China and the United States continue to hold the two top spots, while Germany passes South Korea in the total number of Gold Medals. China has a commanding lead in the total number of Gold Medals: it holds almost as many Gold Medals as the second, third and fourth placed countries combined. The United states leads in the overall medal total. Medals have been awarded to a total of 54 countries. The medal tally table follows.
