Widespread flooding has brought many parts of the north of Ireland to a standstill.  Two major bridges have collapse and almost forty major roads including part of the M1 Motorway, have been shut down.  Flooding was pronounced in and around Belfast and counties Down, Armagh and Antrim.   The Broadway Underpass is under 15 feet of water; in County Laois to the south, a train derailed following a landslide. Police have asked people in affected areas not to venture out of their homes unless it's absolutely necessary.  Roads have been damaged and man hole covers washed away making travel hazardous.  Police and rescue services are overwhelmed. The flooding was triggered by about three weeks of exception weather; some places in Antrim and Down saw two thirds of the August monthly rainfall occur in a single day.  Heavy rain is expected to continue for the next ten days. < Prev   Next >
