August 25, 2008: The government appointed bishop of Beijing, Joseph Li Shan, has stated that he would like to see Pope Benedict XVI visit China. Li's appointment as bishop was seen as a positive move by the Vatican. The Church in China is controlled by the communist government where it's referred to as the Patriotic Catholic Church; the church in China is reportedly growing rapidly and now claims over 20 million members, though many Catholics worship outside the state-controlled church. Pope Benedict has made reconciliation with Catholics in China as a personal priority.
