Biocryst is an emerging pharmaceutical company located in Birmingham, AL. The stock has gyrated for the past few years as the stock follows the fortunes of peramivir, a drug in development to fight the flu. Peramivir received emergency FDA approval for hosptial use during the recent H1N1 pandemic. An NDA has been filed for the drug in South Korea and Japan. Yesterday, Biocryst announced positive news on BCX4208, a drug that just completed a phase IIa trial to fight gout. The company is in competition with Ardea which is also developing a therapy for gout. The Ardea drug is a little further along in the clinic. Shares in BCRX have jumped from $7 to $8.25 since the news on BCX4208. The real driver for this company will be news on peramivir.
