August 23, 2008: Suffering from increasing criticism and unfavorable comparisons to arch-rival, Apple [NASDAQ:APPL], Microsoft [NASDAQ:MSFT] will launch an advertising blitz featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld. The $300 million campaign is expected to start in September. Rumors abound that the slogan for the campaign is "Windows - not Walls." Microsoft has been facing some bad press in the last twelve months. The two year Mac/PC from Apple hasn't helped the company either. The new Windows Vista operating system has been loudly criticized as unreliable and user unfriendly. Microsoft's response, to promise faster delivery of the next generation system, has only fueled criticism. The company is facing challenges from upstart Google [NASDAQ:GOOG], which has begun offering work processing and spreadsheet applications online, competing directly with Microsoft's lucrative Office product. Microsoft has responded by lowering the price of its Student Office Suite to $99 and making it available to anyone. Meanwhile Apple sales have increased steadily, while still a fraction of the PC market, the explosive growth hasn't gone unnoticed by Microsoft executives. So in the eponymous hit series, guess what type of computer Jerry Seinfeld use: yep, an Apple.
