August 24, 2008: With that, it's over. The Games of the XXIX Olympiad have drawn to a close. China has dominated the Gold Medal count with a clear lead over the number two country, the USA. The United States led in the overall medal count, but a cleared picture is provided in looking at a weighted medal count: awarding there points for Gold, two for Silver and one for a Bronze Medal. In this weighted count, China leads the US by three points. Russia has had an excellent Olympic Games rapidly moving up the medal tables in the past few days. Russia claims a total of 23 Gold Medals and 72 overall putting it in third place in both categories. Great Britain, host of the next Games in 2012, earned fourth place in both counts giving the country its best Olympic Games performance since 1908. Ireland earned its three medals, one Silver and two Bronze, in boxing. The Olympic Gams now moves to London. British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was on hand for the Closing Ceremonies and to see Britain assume the mantle of host for the XXX Games. There's wide spread agreement that the Beijing Olympics were a spectacular success. Host nation, China, has had a major impact on the Oympics movement. Over the next few years, we'll discover what kind of an impact the Olympic movement has had on China. The medal tally table follows.
