August 28, 2008: The Irish government sought to quell speculation about a second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty as premature. The Lisbon Treaty represents a change in the legal structure of the EU. It incorporates many of the features that were previously rejected when voters in other member states were polled on a new constitution. EU representatives claim that the Treaty makes the Union more democratic. However, it appears that they only want to ensure that the Treaty is enacted is to ignore the repeated wishes of members when they're given the option to voice an opinion at the ballot box. Ireland, which rejected the Treaty earlier in the year, has received some muted criticism on the vote. Other countries, such as the Czech Republic, applauded the result. Each country must ratify the treaty for it to take effect. The no vote by Ireland has delayed ratification.
