August 29, 2008: American icon Barbie, owned by Mattel [NYSE:MAT], the world's largest maker of toys, has the beaten owners of the urban Bratz line in a $100 million copyright infringement lawsuit. Mattel attorneys convinced a California jury that because Bratz creator, Carter Bryant, was under contract with Mattel when he had the idea for a competing line of plastic dolls, he violated Mattel's intellectual property (IP). The four year old dispute has been closely watched by IP attorneys as it could set precedent for other cases. Bratz creator did admit to taking some Mattel doll paraphernalia when he originally did mock ups of the Bratz line. He pitched the concept to Mattel competitor MGA, which ultimately developed and marketed the Bratz line. Busty Barbie celebrates her 50th birthday next year.
