For those of us that live in an earthquake zone, the term epicenter is an important one.  Distance from the epicenter often determines the level of damage–those closer being usually worse off.  Geologists have a precise meaning for the term epicenter, it hinges on the definition of another term, the hypocenter.  The hypocenter of an earthquake is the location beneath the surface of the Earth where the rupture in the fault actually occurs.  The hypocenter can be many kilometers deep.  Energy radiates outward from this point.  The epicenter is the location on the surface of the Earth which lies directly above the hypocenter.  The term epicenter is often used incorrectly in news reports when hypocenter is actually the correct term. < Prev   Next >
