September 13, 2008: The number of people killed in the September 12 crash of a Metrolink commuter train collision with a freight train is now approaching twenty-four.  The rescue operation is now being classified as a recovery effort.  More bodies are expected to be removed from the wreckage. A Metrolink spokeswoman, Denise Tyrrell, stated that engineer of the Metrolink train appeared to have failed to stop at a signal.  Moments later, the train collided with an oncoming freight train in the vicinity of Chatsworth, California.  The engineer is believed to be among those who perished in the crash.  While the official death toll now stands at eighteen, a coroner from Los Angeles County reported that the count does not include several bodies in the train that could be seen but not recovered. < Prev   Next >
