Irish based Ryanair Holdings, Inc. [NASDAQ:RYAAY] today made a stunning announcement that it soon planned to place an order for up to 400 new aircraft, representing a huge increase in the current fleet size of 166 Boeing 737-700 planes. Group CEO, Michael O'Leary, stated in an interview with German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung that the order could lead to aircraft deliveries starting in 2013. The news follows months of negotiating between the company and both Airbus and Boeing [NYSE:BA].

The company recently announced that it could post its first quarterly loss in almost twenty years; however, the intent to place such a huge order is regarded by many as indicating a positive outlook for the rapidly growing carrier.

"New aircraft are about half as expensive as they were a few years ago, as a result of the weaker US dollar." O'Leary said. Though the fleet consists of only Boeing 737-700 planes, O'Leary stated that "It is also manageable for us to give the order to Airbus."

The current fleet of 166 aircraft could increase to just under 200 planes by March of 2009 and 265 aircraft by March of 2012 as a result of orders placed with Boeing shortly after the 9/11 attacks. With the downturn in air travel in late 2001, Ryanair was able to purchase equipment on favorable terms.

Boeing is viewed as the leading contender for the upcoming order, given Ryanair's existing relationship with the company coupled with the weak dollar. An order of 400 aircraft would be a welcome boost to the Chicago based manufacturer, which is currently overshadowed in news headlines with the recent launch of commercial Airbus A380 service.

Ryanair didn't provide details about the timing of the purchase.
