August 21, 2008: In a story that keeps on giving, there are now reports that the International Olympics Committee (IOC) is launching a probe into the age of Chinese gymnasts. Commentators have complained for days about the age of these diminutive stars, many of whom look like pre-teens. The IOC responding to the growing chorus of complaints has decided to investigate the matter. An official of the committee referred to discrepancies in the age of double Gold Medal winner He Kexin, which prompted the investigation. Her passport shows that she was born on January 1, 1992; however, other documents have been discovered that indicate her birth date as January 1, 1994. Gymnasts must be at least sixteen years old to compete meaning a contestant born in 1994 would be ineligible. The results of the investigation are not likely to published until after the closing ceremonies, thus saving the Chinese hosts from any potential embarrassment should the claim of cheating be verified. |

August 21, 2008: There is no change in the overall standings, though the US has closed the gap with China slightly in the Gold Medal tally and pulled ahead in the overall medal count. Great Britain remains in third place for the total number of Gold medals earned, while Russia is a solid third in the medal totals. Jamaica with its stellar performance in Track and Field has five first place spots. A total of eighty nations have one medals in the Beijing Olympic Games. The medal tally table follows. |

August 20, 2008: One again, no change in leadership: China has won the most Gold Medals, while the US leads in the overall medal count. Russia has moved up to third place in the medal count, though Britain is number three in the Gold Medal tally. Australia trails Britain in the overall medal count, while South Korea has dropped to seventh place in the Gold Medal standings. Hungary has won four silver medals, but has yet to earn a Gold Medal. August 19, 2008: It wasn't quite what Michael O'Neill expected when he returned from spending over two months in Australia, but his friends and neighbors were mourning his passing. He found his front door had been smashed in by local police, frantic to find his body. There were even rumors of foul play. The lesson learned for O'Neill, 49 from Middlesbrough in England, is that if you are going to Australia and you're planning the trip at the last minute, tell someone; don't just vanish. Neighbors thought he was dead. Their fears were verified when a death notice appeared in a local paper for Michael O'Neill. The death notice included the names of his two very-much-alive brothers, Terry and Kevin. It wasn't some sordid prank. It turned out that there were two Michael O'Neill's in Middlesbrough with brothers called Terry and Kevin. Now there's only one and he's at the hardware store buying a new front door. |

August 19, 2008: Delta Airlines [NYSE:DAL] is the latest US carrier to announce WiFi on US flights. American Airlines [NYSE:AMR] announced the service on its transcontinental service between LAX and JFK, stating that its entire fleet of fifteen B762 aircraft would be fitted with the new service. WiFi was scheduled to begin in early July 2008, but has yet to appear. AMR is partnering with Aircell. American is still testing the service. In September, at a special meeting for its top level frequent flyers, Continental Airlines [NYSE:CAL] announced its intent to roll out WiFi system wide. An official announcement was made on January 29. Continental is partnering with LiveTV LLC. Continental predicts that the service will be available on around 200 of its 350 aircraft by year's end. The service will not be available on any of its transatlantic equipment (B752s, B762s, B764s, B772s and the soon to be delivered B787s). During the meeting with frequent flyers in Houston in September 2007, Continental CEO Larry Kellner assured attendees that measured would be taken to ensure that passengers could not use the service to make phone calls. Delta is also partnering with Aircell to install the service on 330 aircraft. A flat fee ranging from about $10 to $15 will be charged depending on the lenght of the flight. The service could provide an extra revenue stream to the financially beleaguered US carriers. |
