Great Lakes Airlines has announced that it will increase service from Ontario, CA. Great Lakes, a regional carrier, has a major presence in Denver, CO with a smaller operation in St. Louis, MO. Ontario, part of the Los Angeles World Airports, has suffered a reduction in service from some major carriers. Great Lakes appears ready to fill that void by offering intra-California service. The carrier currently offers services from Ontario to Prescott, AZ and to Visalia, CA. Service should begin in the fall. |

So, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have collapsed. They exist but are in conservatorship. They'll be taken over by regulators and the Treasury will purchase the senior preferred stock, which is owned by other US banks. The problem that the two companies had was capitalization. Even a a month or two ago, liquidity wasn't the issue it is today, but things deteriorated quickly. Like many banks, they have notes maturing at the end of this calendar year. I think that there's between $80 to $100 billion in bonds issued by various banks which are should mature at year's end. The companies don't have cash to honor their obligations and remain comfortably liquid; the capital markets aren't a friendly place to try and refinance, particularly as housing prices continue to soften. That appears to be the problem. |

New York, August 27, 2008: Brooklyn and Chicago recently used J.P. Morgan [NYSE:JPM] prepaid debit cards in successful campaigns to take firearms off the streets. The gun buy back programs were sponsored by local law enforcement officials who offered citizens prepaid debit cards for working guns, no questions asked. More than 7,500 firearms were collected at community churches and other turn-in sites in the two cities. "We are proud to assist a number of major cities become more secure through the distribution of J.P. Morgan's prepaid debit cards," said Laurie Neill, managing director of public sector solutions, J.P. Morgan. "Prepaid debit cards are the best payment option for programs like these. Program administrators are able to distribute cards on the spot at collection locations and do not have to worry about the additional time, costs and oversight associated with paper check distribution. Participants are paid instantly and have immediate access to their funds instead of having to wait for a check to arrive in the mail or taking time to cash a check." |
