November 28, 2009: An article in the journal Nature gives hope to the idea of using electron spin, or intrinsic angular momentum, as a way to store binary data. Researchers reported producing spin polarized electrons in silicon at room temperature. Historically, electronic information is stored through a system of transistors–the traditional transistor-transistor logic or TTL system. The system produces two states: a slightly negative voltage or none. More recently systems use CMOS or something equivalent, where a charge can either be stored at a junction of be absent. Each system uses two states: one representing 1, the other 0. Intrinsic angular momentum can be classified as either up or down, providing the basic difference needed for a modern storage system. This article represents a first step in using spin to store information; such a system is expected to use much less energy and provide a greater information density than current systems.

November 13, 2009: NASA has reported that the experiment launched last month to search for water on the moon was a success. The finding is believed to be significant in that relatively large amounts of the polar solvent were found on the lunar surface.The experiment in October involved the collision of the two ton rocket Centaur with the lunar crater Cabeus, located at the southern pole. Spectroscopic measurements of the debris thrown up during the impact revealed the presence of both ice and water vapor. Ultraviolet analysis revealed the presence of the hydroxyl radical, which is most probably formed during the solar photodegradation of water vapor. Scientists estimated that over 200 pounds, or around 100 kg, of water was present in the debris thrown up by the impact. The rocket is estimated to have made a hole of about 60 to 70 feed in diameter.

Philadelphia, PA August 31. 2008: Researchers have discovered two new genes that increase the risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in childhood. While further study is needed to identify the specific disease-causing mutations in these new genes, the researchers say the genes are particularly strong candidates to be added to the list of genes already known to affect IBD. "As we continue to find genes that interact with each other and with environmental influences in this complex, chronic disease, we are building the foundation for personalized treatments tailored to a patient's genetic profile," said co-first author Robert N. Baldassano, M.D., director of the Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The Space Shuttle is due for retirement in 2010, leaving the US with no heavy lifting capability to service the Space Station. A new rocket system doesn't come on-line until 2015. In the intervening five years, the US had planned to rely on the Russian program. Recent events in Georgia have politicians and NASA officials alike rethinking this option. An internal memo, leaked on August 29, revealed that NASA is considering extending the Shuttle program to fill the gap. The challenge facing NASA is that the Shuttle requires a head to toe safety check. Just like aircraft, the check involves full dismantling and reassembly of the system, something for which NASA had no contingency plans. No decision has been made, but with US/Russian relations deteriorating and 2010 looming a decision is required soon!

These tests ensure the spacecraft is prepared for its mission to collect the highest resolution images and most comprehensive geological data set ever returned from the moon. The objective of the mission is to map the lunar surface in preparation for human missions to the moon, which are planned to occur by 2020. The first two tests for the orbiter were the spin test and vibration test. The spin test determines the spacecraft's center of gravity and measures characteristics of its rotation. During vibration testing, engineers checked the structural integrity of the lunar probe aboard a large, shaking table that simulated the rigorous ride the orbiter will encounter during liftoff aboard an Atlas rocket.

Images from the Hubble Space Telescope have helped explain the exotic structure of a neighboring galaxy. Neighboring is just 235 million light years away. The study of the galaxy known as NGC 1275, led by Cambridge professor Andrew Fabian, was published in a recent edition of Nature. The galaxy has many thread-like filaments of gaseous materials. The filaments of matter stretch beyond the galaxy into neighbors with strong gravitational fields. How the structure was maintained was a mystery, since the gravitational should collapse the matter trigger the formation of stars. The images from Hubble allowed scientist to hypothesize that strong magnetic fields counteracted the gravitational force and allow the filament structures of material to remain stable.

The Winter edition of Sociological Quarterly included some interesting results about church attendance and performance in high school. In fact, results showed that church attendance has as much influence on a student's GPA (grade point average, a measure of academic performance) as does whether the parents themselves are college graduates. The study concluded that the reason for the influence of church was as follows:<ul><li>They develop friendship with peers who have similar values</li><li>They're more likely to participate in extracurricular activities</li><li>They regularly contact with adults who provide role models</li><li>The students' parents are more likely to be in contact with their friends' parents</li></ul>Other studies show that church-goers have less stress and tend to live longer.Jennifer Glanville from the University of Iowa and colleagues form the University of Notre Dame, David Sikkink and Edwin Hernandez, analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a statistically representative sample of students from the seventh to the twelfth grade that started in 1994.

Many people have reported that the actions of their dog alerted them to health problems. In England, researchers have investigated these claims, and have found that dogs can detect signs of cancer in the urine of patients diagnosed with the problem. The research is being carried out by Dr. Donald Broom at Cambridge University in Britain.
