September 10, 2009: So, the question is where do the names Bó and Brí come from? Well, breeders usually decide on the first letter of the dog's registered name. Some breeders like to use the same letter as the mother's name. Carla Zayac, who bred the puppies, runs through the alphabet with each successive litter. Being her second Irish Wolfhound litter, the names begin with the letter B–their kennel names, which are registered with the American Kennel Club, begin with the letter B. A dog's call name could differ from the kennel name and often does for show dogs. The call names for the dogs are Bó and Brí. Bó will always wear a black collar, lead, etc. while Brí will sport pink. I'll post pictures of the pair in this area of the website. Bó is pronounced like the French word beau, while the word Brí sounds like Brie, the cheese. Their kennel or registered names are Buachaill Bó and Bríste Crón. Each of the two names comes from the Irish Language or Gaelic. Bó's name, Buachaill Bó, translates as "cowboy" in English. Brí's kennel name, Bríste Crón, translates as "dark pants" or "dark trousers." Each of them is a brindle color right now; however, Brí is slightly darker. I expect Bó to be a light-colored brindle when he's an adult. |

September 9, 2009: Bó and Brí had their first vet appointment on today. They saw Dr. Wu at Rose City Veterinary Hospital in Pasadena. Each is in excellent health. Both Bó and Brí weigh exactly 48.7 pounds (22.1 kg), a good weight for a healthy, Irish Wolfhound puppy of 15 weeks. The male will ultimately weigh more than the female. If all goes well, they'll each be in the 90 to 110 pound range by the time they hit six months of age; they're soon going to hit a growth spurt. They're both pretty social and, naturally, curious about everything. Brí is the smarter one of the pair–at least she's a great problem solver compared to Bó. She has a really long tail–it drags on the ground–which suggests she could grow up to be a large female. Time will tell. |

September 8, 2009: Bó and Brí made the journey today from Coulterville, CA to Pasadena. Coulterville is a small, rural town located by Yosemite National Park. The area is beautiful, sparsely populated but it seemed somewhat crowded with hundreds of overseas tourists. The two Irish Wolfhound puppies were bred by Carla Zayac; they're part of her second litter. About half of their lineage traces back to the Eagle line of the late, great Sam Ewing. Sam lived outside Philadelphia, PA and was a giant in the world of Irish Wolfhounds. The two pups were born on May 24; the litter consisted of eight puppies. They're lively friendly animals, but once they were enclosed in the back of the minivan, they were clearly scared. They stuck close to one another as we journeyed through the badly surfaced back roads of rural Coulterville. About 30 minutes into the trip, Brí nudged her way to the front of the minivan. She owned that spot, not letting Bó near it, despite repeated attempts. The two of them settled in and slept for most of the trip. Only one break was needed about ninety minutes after leaving Coulterville. At a Starbucks, the two jumped out of the van, relieved themselves and were happy to get back in. The trip back to Pasadena took about four hours. Traffic was fairly light and moved well. Upon arrival, the two puppies were let loose in the backyard. They gladly ran around exploring their new domain. They were happy to be allowed inside and took to the many toys that were waiting for them. They're self-confident, friendly, well-adjusted puppies. It will be fun to watch them grow. |
