August 17, 2008: Nothing has happened in the numbers 1 and 2 spots. The US started to close the gap earlier in the day, but then the Chinese team came roaring back ensuring they had a dominant position in the Gold Medal tally. China still leads in Gold Medals with 35 to 19 for the US. Team USA has garnered the most medals of an country with 65 to China's 61. The big news in today's games has been the performance of Great Britain, which is now in third place in the overall Gold Medal count and is tied for fourth place overall. Britain has performed extremely well in cycling with 40% of its medal count coming from this sport. The NBC sports commentator Jim Lampley, when talking about Britain's remarkable resurgence said, "Now, if only the games had snooker, darts and a dog show." The table below includes an extra column, designed to better show the relative standings of each competitor. A Gold Medal is awarded three points, Silver two and Bronze one. The points are totaled for each country and the result presented in the seventh column.Seven more countries won medals today bringing the total number of nations awarded medals to 68.
