When they hear the news for the first time, most people are shocked, yes shocked, to hear that the person who wrote probably the most quintessentially Irish pieces is not, in fact, Irish. He wasn't even American; he was actually English.The lyrics to Danny Boy were written by Frederic Weatherly who was born in Portishead in Somerset. The melody is the famous Derry Air, also called the Londonderry Air. Weatherly wrote the lyrics to Danny Boy in 1910. In fact, it was Weatherly's sister who set the lyrics to the melody of the Derry Air. The song was originally written for a woman singing to a man; however, by 1918, Weatherly changed the lyrics to the form we know and love today.
