Irish is the national language of Ireland, but how many people actually speak it, either on a daily basis or at all? The question as to how many people in Ireland speak Irish as a first language is difficult to tell precisely; however, based on data from the 2006 census of Ireland, there are 91,862 people living in a Gaeltacht–a predominately Irish speaking area. The total population of the southern part of the island of Ireland was 4.4 million in the 2006 census, meaning that the likely proportion of native Irish speakers is probably around 2%.
