The Italian government has decided to rewrite the rules in effort to save Alitalia. The idea is to split the corporation into two entities: one part will keep the debt; the other will be debt-free. The debt-free component will be allowed to fail. The government also proposed handing the surviving entity an injection of $1.5 billion in new funding. In separate news, Aer Lingus reported a larger than anticipated loss of €22 million. The loss put further pressure on the government to act on its beleaguered national carrier, which was less than two weeks from folding.
