November 12, 2009: The Church in Ireland is in talks with the government to hand over control of some primary schools. The Church currently controls just over 3000 of the 3200 primary schools in the state. Brigid McManus, the secretary general of the department of education, will hold discussions with leading Catholic bishops on the issue. The department is under pressure to offer a greater diversity of school choice.
