Tens of thousands of pilgrims from all over Ireland, many barefoot, descended on the Marion Shrine at Knock in the west of Ireland. The pilgrimage is an annual event centered on the Feast of the Assumption, August 15. The observation includes a novena running through August 22, by which time more than 150,000 thousand pilgrims are expected to attend. The theme of the 2008 novena is "The Creed that is Dear to the Church." The keynote preacher at masses on the Feast of the Assumption is Fr. Sean McDonagh, a priest with the Columban Fathers in Navan, Co. Meath.
