November 16, 2009: With a looming budget crisis, Ireland is fast becoming the new Sick Man of Europe. The deficit is approaching 12% of GDP?far beyond the 3% tolerated by the EU. In an effort to rein in spending, Taoiseach Brian Cowen has threatened to force through salary cuts for civil servants; his goal is to reduce spending by about $1.9 billion through reductions in salaries. Cowen was in Bundoran, County Donegal at a meeting at Ógra Fianna Fáil. The Taoiseach has issued a challenge to the opposition parties to come up with savings of about $6 billion. He also indicated that extra taxes, including a new third rate for those earning €100,000 or more, may be used to achieve the budget cutting goals.
