A salmonella outbreak has a possible link to a plant in County Kildare in Ireland. The scare has spread to five EU countries; the most recent additions to the list are France and Sweden; the countries where the problem was already identified are Ireland, Britain and Finland. As of August 18, 132 people have contracted the bug; in tests, samples from most people show the same genetic fingerprint as the bacterium found in the County Kildare plant. One person in Britain, a 77 year old woman died from complications due to a possible salmonella infection. Dawn Foods, the owner of the Kildare plant, has withdrawn suspect food.
