An officer of the PSNI has the distinction of being the first to use a Taser in Northern Ireland. The controversial weapon produces a high voltage electrical discharge disabling its victim. The weapon was used against father in Derry who had locked himself into a house with his children. The PSNI revealed that the man had been detained last Saturday under the Mental Health Act. The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission has expressed concerned about the introduction of the device.
