The permanent diaconate is to be restored in Ireland. The permanent diaconate in many parts of North American was restored in the 1970s. Bishops in Ireland have decided to restore the diaconate there too. Permanent deacons are ordained members of the clergy; priests and bishops were first ordained deacons–taking vows of celibacy and obedience–their status is called transient in that there is an expectation that they will later be ordained priests. Permanents deacons aren't required to take a vow of celibacy–in fact, permanent deacons must be married when they're ordained–but they are required to take a vow of obedience to a bishop and are incardinated into a diocese. A deacon is no longer a member of the laity; he is a cleric and often wears clerical attire when working on church functions. Deacons may perform many of the same functions as a priest: perform baptisms and weddings; preach the Gospel at Mass; care for the sick and officiate at funerals. While deacons assist at Mass and may lead at a Eucharistic service, they cannot consecrate. The Archdiocese of Dublin and the diocese of Elphin have started accepting applications to be considered for permanent deacons. The formation for the diaconate is, in many measures, identical to that of a priest. Training can take four years and, essentially, requires the deacon candidate to earn a degree in theology.
