As if more evidence were really needed, a survey of residents of Fingal County Council, an administrative district in Dublin, shows that over one hundred different languages are spoken. The area includes Swords, Balbriggan and Blanchardstown has almost one quarter of a million residents, 40,000 of whom are non-nationals. A survey of 1200 residents revealed that half of those in the area were from the rest of Europe, with 20% having emigrated from Africa and about 14% from Asia. Most of those surveyed, about 90%, were comfortable communicating in English. The information was revealed by Michael O'Donovan, the Mayor of Fingal, at a meeting of the Fingal Ethnic Network.
