Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has assigned Our Lady Queen of Peace parish in the Merrion Road area of Dublin to Opus Dei. The parish is among the wealthiest in the archdiocese. Opus Dei is a personal prelature of the Pope consisting of about 90,000 members and about 4,000 priests; there are about 700 members in Ireland including 17 priests. It was founded in Spain in 1928. From September 1, the new pastor will be Opus Dei priest Fergus O'Connor assisted by Charlie Connolly. When asked about the change, which apparently didn't involve consultation of the members of the parish, a spokesperson for the diocese said "the decision was made by the archbishop, as was the case with all the other parishes attributed to religious orders. There was no difference in practice on this occasion; the Parish Pastoral Council was informed in advance. Parishioners were informed last Sunday."
