Irish tax payers have requested €535 million, close to $1 billion, in tax refunds. Of the 2.37 million filers, about 800,000 have filed for claims in rent, health related expenses and trade union subscriptions. The increase in claims over the past few years is mainly due to a publicity campaign mounted by the Revenue Commissioners, the Irish equivalent of the IRS, to encourage claims on basic tax credits.
