A Nigerian priest, Fr. John Achebe, was arrested at Dublin airport and imprisoned on suspicion of attempting to enter the country illegally. Fr. Achebe, dressed in clerical garb, was on a flight from Istanbul and arrived in Ireland on a tourist visa to visit relatives in Limerick. Following his arrest, he was escorted to Cloverhill Prison. The next day, after the intervention of the Nigerian Ambassador, Fr. Achebe was released. The Immigration Act of 2004 grants extensive authority to the Garda National Immigration Bureau to detain citizens from a number of different countries for an indefinite period of time.
