In an effort to ward of bankruptcy, US Airways has charged for checked baggage and starting selling food and soda on the plane. Things that used to be free are now additional charges. However, in the category of what the hell are you thinking, US Airways has decided to eliminate a benefit from its most loyal customers: elite level flyers--those that fly up to 100,000 miles a year with the carrier--will no longer earn bonus miles. Of course, US Airways is the only carrier in the US to attempt this cutback. It's not as if it represents a savings: the airlines can control how many and how often miles can be redeemed. Taking away a benefit--a cherished benefit--from the most loyal customers ranks up there with the dumbest business move I've seen. Move over New Coke, US Airways wants to earn some bragging rights!
