In a follow up to a story last week, the team responsible for the Phoenix Mars Lander has indicated that the presence of perchlorates on the Martian surface may not be an issue for the presence of life. Life does exist in the most inhospitable of locations on Earth, the Atacama Desert in the mountains of Chile, where perchlorates abound. Testing for perchlorates continues. The team has now conducted two tests on Martian soil and has concluded that the initial report of the presence of perchlorates appears to be valid. They are, however, finalizing a third experiment which, if results are positive, will confirm the initial suspicion of perchorate salts on the surface of Mars.
