Images from the Hubble Space Telescope have helped explain the exotic structure of a neighboring galaxy. Neighboring is just 235 million light years away. The study of the galaxy known as NGC 1275, led by Cambridge professor Andrew Fabian, was published in a recent edition of Nature. The galaxy has many thread-like filaments of gaseous materials. The filaments of matter stretch beyond the galaxy into neighbors with strong gravitational fields. How the structure was maintained was a mystery, since the gravitational should collapse the matter trigger the formation of stars. The images from Hubble allowed scientist to hypothesize that strong magnetic fields counteracted the gravitational force and allow the filament structures of material to remain stable.
